Peri Oral Dermatitis and Skin Rashes

Red bumpy rash near the mouth and nose? Most likely its Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis can appear as a bumpy red maybe tichy rash around the mouth, chin and nose.

This is something a good skin clinic can diagnose and you don't have to visit a Dr or expensive dermatologist!

Sadly most Dr's don't understand what it is and can prescribe cortisone cream. This may work for some but usually it can make it worse! For severe cases that don't' clear up a course of antibiotics may be needed!

One of the first steps in treating peri oral dermatitis is to identify and avoid any potential triggers. This may involve avoiding certain skincare products, such as harsh cleansers or fragrances, that can irritate the skin.

Identifying Symptoms of Perioral Dermatitis

To identify the symptoms of peri oral dermatitis, you can look for redness, small bumps, and dryness around your mouth. These symptoms may also extend to the chin, cheeks, and nose.

The redness can appear as a rash or patches of irritated skin. The small bumps, also known as papules, are usually flesh-colored or slightly red and may be filled with pus. On darker skins the lesions may be hyperpigmented or brown.

The dryness can cause your skin to feel tight and itchy. Some individuals may also experience a burning or stinging sensation in the affected areas.

The condition is most common in females between the 20-45 but can effect people of any age.

It's important to note that peri oral dermatitis can vary in severity and presentation from person to person.
Some individuals may only have mild symptoms, while others may experience more severe inflammation and discomfort.

If you suspect that you have peri oral dermatitis, it is recommended to consult with a skin expert for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. They can provide you with the necessary guidance and prescribe appropriate medications or topical treatments to alleviate your symptoms and manage the condition effectively.

For some clients, they may need to see a doctor and get Topical antibiotics, such as metronidazole or erythromycin to reduce inflammation and control the bacterial overgrowth.

Remember, early identification and treatment can help prevent further irritation and promote healing.

What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?

  • The cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown however several factors may play a role in the development of this condition, including:
  • Inappropriately potent or lengthy topical corticosteroid usage on the face.
  • The use of heavy cosmetics, make-up and moisturisers, sunscreens or antifungal creams on the face.
  • The use of cosmeceuticals including face creams, toners and scrubs.
  • Other initiating factors include corticosteroid eye drops, nasal sprays or “preventer” asthma inhalers.
  • A problem with the skin’s protective barrier
  • A change in the bacteria on the skin
  • Bacteria getting into the hair follicles
  • An allergic reaction
  • Irritation resulting from a skin care product or fluorinated toothpaste
  • Hormonal changes
  • Strong winds
  • UV light

What Causes Peri Oral in children:

Episodes of perioral dermatitis can last weeks or even months. Perioral dermatitis is often chronic and relapsing, but it may resolve after the triggers are removed.

Common Causes of Skin Rashes

One of the most prevalent reasons for the occurrence of bothersome and embarrassing skin conditions is often linked to various environmental factors. Exposure to allergens such as pollen, dust, or certain chemicals can trigger an inflammatory response, leading to skin rashes.

Additionally, extreme weather conditions like heat or cold can also irritate the skin and cause flare-ups. It's important to note that everyone's skin reacts differently to these environmental factors, so what may cause a rash in one person may not affect another. Understanding your own skin's sensitivities and taking preventive measures, such as using hypoallergenic products or wearing protective clothing, can help minimize the risk of developing skin rashes.

Another common cause of skin rashes is contact with irritants or allergens found in personal care products and cosmetics. Ingredients like fragrances, preservatives, and dyes can trigger an allergic reaction in some individuals, leading to redness, itching, and the development of skin rashes.

It's crucial to carefully read product labels and avoid using any items that contain known irritants or allergens if you're prone to skin rashes. If you suspect a specific product is causing your skin rash, it's recommended to discontinue its use and consult with a skin expert to identify the allergen and find suitable alternatives.

By paying attention to your environment and being mindful of the products you use, you can help prevent and manage skin rashes effectively

Treat Perioral Dermatitis and Skin Rashes With Infra Red

Near Infrared (NIR) light with a wavelength of 830 nanometers (nm) has demonstrated the potential to enhance the healing process by targeting cellular regeneration and wound healing at a deeper level.

NIR light is absorbed by the skin's chromophores, specifically within the mitochondria of cells. The mitochondria are often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cells, responsible for generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy source for cellular activities. When exposed to NIR light, these mitochondria are stimulated to produce more ATP.

This increase in ATP production impacts the healing processes by speeding the division of fibroblasts,
Fibroblasts are responsible for collagen and elastin production which improves the rebuilding of the damaged tissue for better wound healing.

It also boosts the circulation and this increased blood flow delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells, while also aiding in the removal of waste products.

Near Infrared light therapy has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which is particularly relevant for peri-oral dermatitis, where inflammation plays a significant role in the condition.

By reducing inflammation, the skin becomes less irritated, redness is diminished, and the discomfort associated with Peri-oral dermatitis is alleviated.

These combined effects contribute to a more efficient and effective healing process, ultimately aiding in the restoration of healthy skin around the mouth.

Managing and Alleviating Discomfort

Ease your discomfort and find relief from the irritating sensation by implementing soothing remedies and techniques.

Managing and alleviating discomfort caused by peri oral dermatitis and skin rashes requires a multi-faceted approach with skin healing, inflammation reduction and then ongoing skin care at home

Zinc supplements and Zinc based suncreen or creams are proven to help inflammatory skin conditions.

It's important to maintain good skincare hygiene by gently cleansing the affected area with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.

Avoid harsh soaps or scrubbing vigorously as this can further irritate the skin. After cleansing, pat the area dry with a soft towel, being careful not to rub or cause friction.

In addition to proper cleansing, applying a moisturizer specifically formulated for sensitive skin can help soothe the irritation and alleviate discomfort. Look for moisturizers that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and contain ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or aloe vera, which have soothing and hydrating properties.

It's also important to avoid any potential triggers or irritants, such as certain cosmetics, spicy foods, or exposure to extreme temperatures. By adopting these techniques and remedies, you can effectively manage and alleviate discomfort associated with peri oral dermatitis and skin rashes, allowing your skin to heal and restore its natural balance.
